How it works
Preparation of the Fabric
The fabric (often cotton or silk) is washed and soaked to remove impurities and natural oils, allowing for better dye absorption.
It undergoes a process called “saaj,” where it is treated with a mixture of natural ingredients, like camel dung, soda ash, and castor oil, to soften the fabric and prepare it for printing.
Block Printing with Natural Dyes
Skilled artisans use hand-carved wooden blocks to apply intricate patterns in multiple stages.
Each block corresponds to a different color or part of the design, typically starting with outlines and progressing to fills.
Natural dyes, such as indigo for blue and madder root for red, are used to create Ajrakh’s signature colors and patterns.
Dyeing and Washing
The fabric is repeatedly dyed and washed after each block is printed to achieve deep, rich colors.
The fabric is boiled with alizarin to fix the colors, resulting in vibrant, long-lasting patterns.
The final product is washed and sun-dried, bringing out the brilliance of the Ajrakh design and making the colors permanent.
